\nCada a\u00f1o, el Directorio y el Consejo Consultivo de AmCham pasan un fin de semana planificando cu\u00e1les ser\u00e1n las prioridades de la C\u00e1mara para el pr\u00f3ximo a\u00f1o. Y \u00e9ste no fue la excepci\u00f3n. <\/p>\n
Durante muchos a\u00f1os, la prioridad de AmCham fue el Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) entre Chile y Estados Unidos. Entonces, una vez que el TLC entr\u00f3 en vigencia, la atenci\u00f3n se concentr\u00f3 en hacer que el acuerdo funcionara y en emplear sus beneficios para incrementar el comercio bilateral. AmCham continuar\u00e1 concentr\u00e1ndose en esta tarea. Creemos que hay mucho por hacer para maximizar sus beneficios, lo que incluye desarrollar mayores flujos de inversi\u00f3n y seguir asesorando a las peque\u00f1as y medianas empresas para que aprovechen el TLC. Adem\u00e1s esperamos promover el mayor uso de visas profesionales y m\u00e1s oportunidades para que las empresas participen en el abastecimiento gubernamental.<\/p>\n
En segundo lugar, nos centraremos mucho m\u00e1s en el tema de la propiedad intelectual. La innovaci\u00f3n es clave para el futuro crecimiento de Chile y la propiedad intelectual es clave para la innovaci\u00f3n exitosa. Si nadie protege el valor de las ideas, \u00bfqui\u00e9n las concebir\u00e1? y \u00bfqui\u00e9n las pensar\u00e1 en Chile? AmCham est\u00e1 comprometida con la concientizaci\u00f3n sobre este tema y la experiencia t\u00e9cnica en esta \u00e1rea.<\/p>\n
Adem\u00e1s, las empresas farmac\u00e9uticas tienen un problema muy espec\u00edfico respecto de la propiedad intelectual. Las autoridades de salud del pa\u00eds certifican un nuevo remedio para que sea introducido al mercado, pero no vinculan esa certificaci\u00f3n a las patentes en poder de la compa\u00f1\u00eda, la que posteriormente debe perseguir a los infractores de dichas autorizaciones en tribunales, un proceso engorroso en Chile, mientras que el infractor contin\u00faa comercializando los que, en efecto, son productos pirateados. Este problema, junto con el mejoramiento de la protecci\u00f3n de datos y las iniciativas para reducir la pirater\u00eda de software, libros y m\u00fasica, ser\u00e1n importantes puntos de atenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
Para AmCham, el avance hacia la resoluci\u00f3n de temas relativos a la propiedad intelectual es imperativo. <\/p>\n
Una tercera prioridad es continuar con la promoci\u00f3n de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE), donde el Premio Anual al Buen Ciudadano Empresarial de AmCham ha demostrado ser muy exitoso. De especial inter\u00e9s resulta que la conciencia corporativa aumente de tal forma que la RSE no opere s\u00f3lo en las compa\u00f1\u00edas internacionales m\u00e1s grandes, sino tambi\u00e9n en las empresas chilenas m\u00e1s peque\u00f1as. <\/p>\n
Finalmente, durante el 2007, AmCham se enfocar\u00e1 en el desarrollo de Chile como una plataforma regional para la inversi\u00f3n y el comercio, aprovechando los TLC que ha suscrito con varios pa\u00edses m\u00e1s, aparte de Estados Unidos. El objetivo es hacer de Chile un lugar mucho m\u00e1s atractivo para los inversionistas extranjeros. \u00c9ste es un tema complejo que implica cuestiones tributarias, mejoras en el dominio del idioma ingl\u00e9s y una disminuci\u00f3n de la burocracia. Sin embargo, si podemos ayudar a que se haga bien, los beneficios son espectaculares: empleo y crecimiento para Chile, y oportunidades para los inversionistas.<\/p>\n
En junio, AmCham ser\u00e1 la anfitriona de la conferencia Business Future of the Americas (BFA), organizada conjuntamente con la Asociaci\u00f3n de C\u00e1maras de Comercio Americanas en Latinoam\u00e9rica (AACCLA). Bajo el lema “Liberando el Esp\u00edritu Empresarial en Occidente\u201d, la conferencia reunir\u00e1 a importantes oradores locales e internacionales y se espera que sea un evento clave en el a\u00f1o dentro del \u00e1mbito comercial de Chile, generando oportunidades concretas para nuestros socios. <\/p>\n
\u00c9stas son las principales prioridades trazadas por AmCham para el 2007 y nuestro principal evento para el a\u00f1o que se aproxima, la Conferencia BFA. No obstante, tambi\u00e9n prestaremos atenci\u00f3n a muchas otras \u00e1reas. Un tema no menor dentro de esto es la difusi\u00f3n del uso del ingl\u00e9s, donde este a\u00f1o el Gran Debate Corporativo, competencia interempresarial de debates entre firmas de todas las c\u00e1maras de comercio de habla inglesa en Chile, tuvo un enorme \u00e9xito. Est\u00e1 previsto que el Gran Debate se repita el pr\u00f3ximo a\u00f1o con una participaci\u00f3n a\u00fan m\u00e1s amplia.<\/p>\n
De modo que, miembros de la AmCham, el directorio junto con el talentoso personal de la C\u00e1mara estar\u00e1n muy ocupados el 2007 a fin de mantener el excelente trabajo de los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os. Ser\u00e1 un genuino esfuerzo de equipo para cumplir la misi\u00f3n de AmCham: \u201cFomentar el libre comercio y la inversi\u00f3n entre Chile y Estados Unidos, siendo la voz efectiva de los socios y facilitando servicios relacionados\u201d.

\nEvery year, AmCham\u2019s Board of Directors and Advisory Council spend a weekend planning the Chamber\u2019s priorities for the following year. And this year was no exception. <\/p>\n
For many years, AmCham\u2019s priority was the Chile-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Then, once the FTA came into force, attention focused on making the agreement work and using its benefits to increase bilateral trade. AmCham will continue to focus on this task. We believe there is much yet to do to maximize its benefits, including developing increased investment flows and continuing to assist small and medium-sized businesses in taking advantage of the FTA. We also hope to promote increased use of professional visas and more opportunities for businesses to participate in government procurement.<\/p>\n
Secondly, we will focus even more on the issue of intellectual property. Innovation is key to Chile\u2019s future growth and intellectual property is key to successful innovation. If no one protects the value of ideas, who will think of them? And who will think of them in Chile? AmCham is committed to developing awareness of this issue and expertise in this area.<\/p>\n
Additionally, pharmaceutical companies have a very specific problem with intellectual property. The health authorities certify a new medicine for release into the market, but do not tie this certification into the patents held by the company, which must then pursue infringers in the courts, a lengthy process in Chile, while the infringer continues to market what are, in effect, pirated products. This problem, along with data protection enhancement and efforts to reduce piracy of software, books and music, will be important areas of focus.<\/p>\n
For AmCham, progress toward resolving intellectual property issues is a top priority. <\/p>\n
A third priority is continuing promotion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) where AmCham\u2019s annual Good Corporate Citizen Prize has proved highly successful. Of special interest is the widening of corporate awareness so that CSR is not just practiced in larger international companies, but also in smaller Chilean companies. <\/p>\n
Finally, AmCham will be focusing in 2007 on Chile\u2019s development as a regional platform for investment and trade, taking advantage of the FTAs it has with many other countries besides the U.S. The aim here is to make Chile an even more attractive place for foreign investors. This is a complex issue which involves tax matters, improvement in English language capabilities, and reduction in bureaucracy. However, if we can help get this right, the benefits are great – employment and growth for Chile and opportunities for investors.<\/p>\n
In June, AmCham will be hosting the Business Future of the Americas (BFA) Conference, organized jointly with the Association of American Chambers of Commerce in Latin America (AACCLA). Under the title “Unleashing Entrepreneurship in the Western Hemisphere\u201d, the conference will bring together prominent local and international speakers and is expected to be a key event in Chile\u2019s business year, generating concrete opportunities for our members. <\/p>\n
These are the principal priorities mapped out by AmCham for 2007 and our main event – the BFA Conference. But many other areas will also be receiving attention. Not least of these is spreading the use of English, where earlier this year the Great Corporate Debate contest, an inter-company debating competition between companies of all the English-speaking Chambers of Commerce in Chile, was a great success. It is planned to repeat the Great Debate next year with even wider participation.<\/p>\n
So AmCham members, the board and AmCham\u2019s talented staff will have their hands full in 2007 to keep up the excellent work of past years.
