\nAparte de las guerras reales iniciadas alrededor del globo, hay otra batalla m\u00e1s siniestra en desarrollo: una batalla de belleza y formas. A la izquierda, vistiendo un traje demasiado grande, tenemos a un Obeso; y a la derecha, vestida a la \u00faltima moda, tenemos a las Modelos. Y, al centro, estamos t\u00fa y yo, gente normal que sigue con la vida com\u00fan y corriente donde nada es perfecto, pero que trata de hacer ejercicios (\u00a1uy!) y no consentirse demasiado (\u00a1auch!).<\/p>\n

De modo que \u00bfqu\u00e9 est\u00e1 en juego en esta disputa global por nuestros cuerpos y qu\u00e9 tiene eso que ver con bUSiness CHILE y AmCham? <\/p>\n

Algunos antecedentes. La obesidad ha estado creciendo en los pa\u00edses desarrollados y en los en v\u00edas de desarrollo durante muchos a\u00f1os, situaci\u00f3n de la que son responsables el menor trabajo f\u00edsico, la menor ejercitaci\u00f3n f\u00edsica y la comida m\u00e1s barata y abundante (con frecuencia comida r\u00e1pida). Las modelos, por lo general pero no exclusivamente mujeres, han encandilado a una audiencia mundial durante a\u00f1os, generando comentarios y controversias sobre la ropa que los dise\u00f1adores les hacen usar y sobre los cuerpos que la lucen.<\/p>\n

Como con todo, nuestro mundo moderno tiende a los extremos. La obesidad extrema es una enfermedad donde los malos genes act\u00faan como causante y los malos h\u00e1bitos, como multiplicador, pero a\u00fan puedo demandar a un proveedor de comida r\u00e1pida por mi adicci\u00f3n a la s\u00faper mega hamburguesa de tres kilos. De modo que \u00bfqu\u00e9 importa si soy talla 82 mientras sea feliz? S\u00f3lo necesito que alguien pruebe la silla antes de que me siente. No es un crimen ser grande.<\/B> Lo grande es bello…<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, las modelos parecen haber tocado fondo, si puedo ser tan temerario. Y en algunos casos \u00a1ya no hay que tocar! El look anor\u00e9xico, cadav\u00e9rico ha recibido fuertes cr\u00edticas de los organizadores de eventos y recientemente en Madrid se emple\u00f3 un \u00cdndice de Masa Corporal o IMC -basado sobre el peso y la altura- para medir a las modelos, donde el 30% fue rechazado. \u00a1Hab\u00eda m\u00e9dicos para verificar las estad\u00edsticas! Me ofrec\u00ed para ayudar, pero me rechazaron\u2026<\/p>\n

\u00bfHemos llegamos a un punto decisivo? Como cualquier buen gerente destacar\u00eda, las cifras s\u00f3lo tienen que mejorar; las curvas est\u00e1n todas erradas. Bueno, la comida y el vestuario son negocios muy importantes y muchos miembros de AmCham ganan su dinero, quiz\u00e1s sus fortunas, gracias a los alimentos o las telas. AmCham adem\u00e1s promueve la Responsabilidad Social Corporativa. As\u00ed que, \u00bfcu\u00e1l es el punto?<\/p>\n

Todos estamos conscientes de que un estilo de vida saludable es un deber y de que los alimentos org\u00e1nicos han captado una significativa participaci\u00f3n de mercado en Estados Unidos \u00a1aunque cuestan entre un 30% y un 50% m\u00e1s! Luego, por supuesto, siempre podemos recurrir a un bypass g\u00e1strico o a corchetearnos el est\u00f3mago. Y, en cuanto a la belleza, podemos levantar o estirar donde sea que haya una imperfecci\u00f3n, as\u00ed como colocar una nueva dentadura o busto, es s\u00f3lo cuesti\u00f3n de dolor, tiempo y dinero. Una gran sonrisa, wow, \u00a1mire eso\u2026! Incluso ha habido casos de modelos que se han sacado las costillas flotantes para mejorar su \u201cforma y delgadez\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u00a1Basta de este sinsentido! Si el mundo corporativo sigue fomentando estos excesos, nunca podremos tener el privilegio de ser nosotros mismos y envejecer con gracia. Mi madre reci\u00e9n cumpli\u00f3 90 y es bell\u00edsima, sin haberse hecho nunca un retoque o una cirug\u00eda est\u00e9tica. F\u00edjese que estar\u00eda bastante contenta con un nuevo par de piernas si estuvieran disponibles.<\/p>\n

\u00a1\u00a1Coma, beba y sea feliz, porque no podemos siquiera asegurarle que estar\u00e1 vivo ma\u00f1ana!! Y si sus medidas no son ideales, s\u00f3lo recuerde esto: lo redondo todav\u00eda es una forma.<\/B><\/p>\n

\nAside from the very real wars being waged around our globe, there is another more sinister battle being played out – a battle of beauty and shape. On the left, dressed in oversized clothing, we have Obese and on the right, dressed in the very latest fashions, we have Models. And, in the center, we have you and me – normal, regular people getting on with life in the slow lane where nothing is perfect, but we do try to take exercise (ugh!) and not overindulge (agh!).<\/p>\n

So what is really at stake in this global battle for our bodies, and what has it got to do with bUSiness CHILE and AmCham? <\/p>\n

A little background. Obesity has been on the rise in developed and developing countries for many years: less manual labor, less physical exertion and cheaper, more abundant food (often fast food) are blamed. Fashion models, generally but not exclusively female, have titillated a worldwide audience for years, inviting comment and controversy about the clothing that designers have them wear and the bodies on which it hangs.<\/p>\n

As with everything, our modern world tends to extremes. Extreme obesity is often a disease with bad genes as the cause and bad habits as the multiplier, but I can still sue the fast food vendor for causing my addiction to the three-kilo mega-wega burger. So what if I am a size 82 just as long as I am happy? I just need to have someone test the chair before I sit down. It is not a crime to be big.<\/B> Big is beautiful\u2026<\/p>\n

However, the models seem to have bottomed out, if I may be so bold. No bottom at all in some cases! The anorexic, scarecrow look has come in for serious criticism from show organizers and recently in Madrid a body mass index or BMI – based on weight and height – was used to measure models and 30% were rejected. Medics were on hand to verify statistics! I offered to help but was turned down\u2026<\/p>\n

Have we reached a turning point? As any good manager would point out, the figures just have to improve; the curves are all wrong. Well, eating and dressing are very big business and many AmCham members will be making their living, perhaps even their fortune, from food or fabric. AmCham also promotes Corporate Social Responsibility. So, where\u2019s the beef?<\/p>\n

We are all aware that healthy living is a must, and organic foods have captured a significant market share in the U.S. although they cost 30 to 50% more! Then, of course, we can always resort to a gastric bypass or stomach stapling. And, on the beauty side, we can lift or tuck wherever there is an imperfection, and a new set of teeth or breasts is just a question of pain, time and money. Great smile and, wow, look at those\u2026! There have even been cases of models having the lower pair of ribs removed to improve \u201cshape and leanness\u201d. <\/p>\n

Enough of this nonsense I say! If the corporate world continues to encourage these excesses, we will never be allowed the privilege of being ourselves and growing old gracefully. My mother just turned 90 and she\u2019s gorgeous, with never a nip or tuck. Mind you, she would be quite pleased with a new pair of legs if any are on offer.<\/p>\n

Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we cannot even guarantee that you will be alive!! And if your measurements are not ideal, just remember this: round is still a shape.<\/B><\/p>\n
