He estado lejos de Chile por 30 d\u00edas y la mayor parte de ellos los ocup\u00e9 en hacer trekking a trav\u00e9s del noreste de Nepal hacia el Campamento Base del Everest para reunirme con la enormemente exitosa expedici\u00f3n chilena que ha puesto a 11 monta\u00f1istas en la cumbre del Monte Lhotse (8.516 metros) en un lapso de dos d\u00edas, el 11 y 12 de mayo. Tuve un sue\u00f1o y \u00a1ahora he visto los picos del Everest, el Lhotse y el Nuptse!<\/p>\n
La verdad es que escal\u00e9 el Kala Pattar, un pico en cierta forma menor, de 5.600 metros, \u00a1todo un logro para alguien que encuentra que escalar fuera de la cama es muy estresante! Tambi\u00e9n pas\u00e9 una noche en una carpa del campamento base, donde casi me congel\u00e9. No obstante, camin\u00e9 de cinco a ocho horas diarias durante 15 d\u00edas y perd\u00ed m\u00e1s de seis kilos; \u00a1la mejor dieta que haya hecho nunca!<\/p>\n
D\u00e9jenme tratar y resumir.<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n Nepal es una de las naciones m\u00e1s pobres de la tierra y ha luchado por reestablecerse como una democracia (el rey ha sido despojado de todas sus facultades, pero puede mantener un rol \u201cceremonial\u201d) y llegar a acuerdos con los revolucionarios mao\u00edstas que controlan grandes zonas rurales. Todo esto suena inquietante para el viajero, y la prensa internacional ha dado considerable cobertura a las manifestaciones y revueltas. Pero, \u00a1no vimos nada de eso!. Incluso pens\u00e9 en ofrecerme como un nuevo estilo de monarca, pero \u201cEl Hombre Que Quiso Ser Rey\u201d de Kipling termina de manera m\u00e1s bien violenta.<\/p>\n Al arribar el 3 de mayo a Katmand\u00fa, la capital, no presenciamos nada de violencia ni manifestaciones y s\u00f3lo vimos una huelga, que se traduc\u00eda en pilas de basura quem\u00e1ndose en las calles, lo que se sumaba a la visi\u00f3n de una tierra perdida en el tiempo.<\/p>\n Katmand\u00fa es ca\u00f3tica, bulliciosa, contaminada, maloliente, colorida y pobre, repleta de gente ocupada con su vida diaria o que intenta venderte cualquier cosa desde una pulsera hasta un nuevo lavaplatos; y son \u00a1muy persistentes! Una sociedad en donde los hombres de todas las edades recorren las calles d\u00e1ndose la mano -sin indicar nada m\u00e1s que amistad- pero donde hombre y mujeres \u00a1nunca se toman de la mano en p\u00fablico! Una sociedad en donde la mayor\u00eda de los matrimonios son \u201carreglados\u201d. <\/p>\n Nos encontramos con gente tremendamente respetuosa, simp\u00e1tica, paciente y generosa, ya sea que fueran hind\u00faes, budistas, ricos, pobres o indigentes. Pese a la reciente inquietud social, no parece haber conflicto entre las dos principales religiones y el compromiso de practicar sus creencias es absoluto. \u00a1Ellos realmente viven sus religiones!<\/p>\n El tr\u00e1fico es una maravilla de tolerancia humana. Al parecer hay pocas, pero bien entendidas reglas de compromiso e incluso un polic\u00eda ocasional que apunta un brazo en una y otra direcci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, los autos -nuevos y viejos-, las motocicletas con pasajeros sentados en cascos laterales y los triciclos con \u201ccabinas\u201d en la parte trasera hacen sus propias reglas y entrelazan las calles con fuertes bocinazos en tono de \u201cadvertencia\u201d. A menudo est\u00e1n por producirse choques, pero \u00a1NUNCA hay un intercambio de palabras! Lo que en Santiago tendr\u00eda como resultado una violenta confrontaci\u00f3n en Katmand\u00fa s\u00f3lo produce una gentil sonrisa. Incluso los peatones deambulan por las calles a trav\u00e9s de un tr\u00e1fico potencialmente letal como si se deslizaran a trav\u00e9s de una pista de baile. \u00a1Quiz\u00e1s la promesa de la reencarnaci\u00f3n les proporciona la confianza para arriesgarse de tal manera!<\/p>\n Las boutiques son bastante excepcionales y cada marca conocida de equipamiento y ropa indoor y outdoor est\u00e1 disponible a precios incre\u00edblemente bajos. Debe destacarse que todos los art\u00edculos North Face, Patagonia, Columbia, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Lacoste, Benetton, etc. en oferta han sido \u201cfabricados localmente\u201d\u2026 \u00a1pero no estaban para nada malos! Aunque por supuesto, no comprar\u00eda nada falso\u2026<\/p>\n Nuestro programa comenz\u00f3 con una visita a al famoso Stupa budista de Boudhanath (que data del a\u00f1o 500 DC) para recibir una bendici\u00f3n para el viaje \u00e9pico que estaba por venir. \u00a1\u00a1Fue divertido ver algunos hippies de mediana edad que quedaron rezagados de los 70 y 80!!<\/p>\n Tomamos un avi\u00f3n Twin Otter de Katmand\u00fa hasta Lukla, poblado fundado por Sir Edmund Hillary, e iniciamos nuestro viaje. \u00c9ramos seis en el grupo: tres turistas, un sherpa y dos personas a cargo de las maletas. Caminamos de arriba abajo durante los 10 d\u00edas siguientes desde Lukla a Phakding y de ah\u00ed a Namche Bazaar, a Thame, a Khumjung, Pangboche, Phortse, Dingboche, Chhukung, Pheriche, Dugla y Gorak Shep, y luego hasta Kala Pattar y finalmente al campamento base del Everest. <\/p>\n Paramos para almorzar y durante las noches en los lodges de los sherpas. Las instalaciones y la comida eran simples, pero la hospitalidad siempre fue generosa. Llevaba 90 kilos y \u00a1encima sonre\u00eda! Nuestros dos encargados de las maletas (hind\u00faes de villas m\u00e1s abajo) cargaban 40 kilos cada uno.<\/p>\n La vida comenz\u00f3 a ser una rutina de objetivos simples: \u00a1d\u00f3nde est\u00e1 el pr\u00f3ximo lodge, d\u00f3nde podemos sacar la pr\u00f3xima foto! Segu\u00edamos senderos que se hab\u00edan usado desde que el hombre reci\u00e9n comenz\u00f3 a comunicarse y viajar. Desde el aire, pod\u00edas ver esta red de senderos y tambi\u00e9n las antiqu\u00edsimas y cuidadosamente construidas terrazas agr\u00edcolas que dominan la campi\u00f1a.<\/p>\n Nos cuidaban los sherpas, gente de la monta\u00f1a que lleg\u00f3 a Nepal (y al norte de la India) hace unos 400 a\u00f1os. A diferencia de los nepaleses, que son descendientes de India y Euroasia, los sherpas son esencialmente mongoles. Ganaron su prestigio con las expediciones a los Himalayas de principios del siglo XX y hoy en d\u00eda son bastante ricos, poseen lodges y ayudan a organizar expediciones y recorridos a pie Sus lodges son construcciones simples, de dos pisos de piedra con vigas y ventanas de madera. Las puertas son bajas para ayudar a reducir las corrientes fr\u00edas, pero me causaron muchos y fuertes dolores de cabeza\u2026 Las mujeres se visten de manera muy colorida y tradicional. Acarrean yaks, trasladan carga y administran los lodges.<\/p>\n Y finalmente \u00a1Lo logramos! Cumplimos nuestra meta. Caminamos de ida y vuelta. Una experiencia muy pac\u00edfica y poderosa. En el \u00faltimo d\u00eda, nuestro gu\u00eda me pregunt\u00f3 c\u00f3mo podr\u00eda parecerse m\u00e1s Nepal a Chile, con mayores avances y un desarrollo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido. Lo pens\u00e9 y le respond\u00ed luego: \u201cS\u00ed, hay cosas que aprender del modelo socioecon\u00f3mico chileno, pero Chile tiene mucho que aprender de los nepaleses\u201d. I have been away from Chile for 30 days and most of these were spent trekking through northeastern Nepal towards Everest Base Camp to meet up with the tremendously successful Chilean expedition which put 11 climbers on the summit of Mt. Lhotse (8,516 meters) over a two-day period – May 11 and 12. I had a dream and I have now seen the Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse peaks!<\/p>\n The truth is I climbed Kala Pattar, a somewhat lesser peak but, at 5,600 meters, quite an accomplishment for someone who finds climbing out of bed very stressful! I also spent one night in a tent at base camp where I nearly froze solid. Regardless, I trekked five to eight hours a day for 15 days and lost over six kilos; best diet I have ever been on!<\/p>\n Let me try and summarize.<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n Nepal is one of the poorest nations on earth and has struggled to re-establish itself as a democracy (the king has been stripped of all his powers but may retain a \u201cceremonial\u201d role) and to come to terms with Maoist revolutionaries who control large parts of the countryside. All this sounds ominous for the traveler and the international press has given considerable coverage to the demonstrations and riots. But we saw none of this! I even thought of offering myself as a new-style Monarch, but Kipling\u2019s \u201cThe Man Who Would Be King\u201d ends rather violently.<\/p>\n Arriving in Kathmandu, the capital, on May 3 we witnessed no violence, no demonstrations and only one strike, which resulted in piles of garbage burning in the streets, adding to the vision of a land lost in time.<\/p>\n Kathmandu is chaotic, noisy, polluted, smelly, colorful and poor, teeming with people going about their daily lives or intent on selling you anything from a bracelet to a new kitchen sink; and they are very persistent! A society where men of all ages walk the streets holding hands – no indication of anything except friendship – but where men and women never hold hands in public! A society where most marriages are still \u201carranged\u201d. <\/p>\n We found people to be tremendously respectful, kind, patient and generous – whether Hindu or Buddhist, rich, poor or penniless. Despite the recent social unrest, there appears to be no conflict between the two main religions and the commitment to practicing their beliefs is absolute. They live it!<\/p>\n The traffic is a marvel of human tolerance. There appear to be limited but well-understood rules of engagement and even an occasional policeman pointing an arm in one direction or another. However, cars old and new, motor bikes with side-saddle passengers and tricycles with \u201ccabins\u201d on the back make their own rules and weave down streets with horns blasting in a \u201cwarning\u201d tone. There are frequent near misses but NEVER a cross word! What in Santiago would result in a violent confrontation causes only a gentle smile in Kathmandu. Even pedestrians amble across streets through potentially lethal traffic as if gliding across a dance floor. Maybe the promise of reincarnation provides the confidence for such abject risk taking!<\/p>\n The boutiques are quite exceptional and every known brand of indoor and outdoor clothing and equipment is available at incredibly low prices. It should be noted that the North Face, Patagonia, Columbia, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Lacoste, Benetton, etc. items on offer had all been \u201clocally manufactured\u201d\u2026but they weren\u2019t at all bad! Of course, I wouldn\u2019t buy a fake anything\u2026<\/p>\n Our program started with a visit to the famous Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath (dates from 500 AD) to receive a blessing for the epic journey to come. It was fun to see some very middle-aged Hippies left behind from the 1970s & 80s!!<\/p>\n We took a Twin Otter from Kathmandu to Lukla, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, and started our trek. Six in the group: three trekkers, a Sherpa guide and two Porters. We trekked onward and upward over the next ten days from Lukla to Phakding to Namche Bazaar to Thame to Khumjung, Pangboche, Phortse, Dingboche, Chhukung, Pheriche, Dugla and Gorak Shep, then up Kala Pattar and finally to Everest Base Camp. <\/p>\n We stopped at Sherpa lodges for lunch and for the night. Accommodation and food were simple but the hospitality was always generous. Showers, hot water, tea (which is drunk on every possible occasion), battery charge and chocolates are all \u201cextra\u201d and the prices inflated considerably with altitude.<\/p>\n We feasted on the sights and sounds of this age-old approach to the Himalayan peaks. Porters, bent almost double, used a simple head strap to carry unimaginable loads on their backs. Near the market town of Namche Bazaar, I tried lifting the load of a 16-year-old boy headed to the market but was barely able to struggle to my feet, let alone advance a few paces. Roars of laughter! He was carrying 90 kgs – and smiling! Our two porters (Hindus from the lower villages) carried about 40 kgs each.<\/p>\n Life became a routine of simple objectives – where\u2019s the next lodge, where\u2019s the next photo opportunity! You follow trails which have been in use since man first started to communicate and travel. From the air, you can see this network of trails and also the very old and carefully-built agricultural terraces which dominate the countryside.<\/p>\n We were looked after by the Sherpas, a mountain people who came to Nepal (and northern India) some 400 years ago. Unlike the Nepalese, who are of Indian\/Eurasian descent, the Sherpas are essentially Mongols. They earned their fame with the Himalayan expeditions of the early 1900s and today many are quite wealthy, own lodges and help organize expeditions and trekking. Their lodges are simple, two storey, stone constructions with wooden windows and beams. The doors are low to help reduce cold draughts, but which caused me many a severe headache\u2026 The women are very traditionally and colorfully dressed. They herd Yak, carry loads and manage the lodges.<\/p>\n And we made it! We achieved our objective. We walked there and we walked back again. A very peaceful and powerful experience. On the last day, our guide asked me how Nepal could become more like Chile – progressive and fast-developing.
