The United States is Chile’s largest single market, accounting for some 17% of all Chilean exports, and, predicted Concha, Chilean goods worth some US$6 billion will find their way to the U.S. in 2005.

And the U.S. market is not only large, it is also diverse. Over the first eight months of this year, Chilean companies exported an estimated 1,795 different products to the United States. Moreover, the market is not the preserve of Chile’s large exporters – more than 2,000 Chilean businesses currently export to the U.S., of which 90% are small or mid-sized companies or even micro-firms, a trend that the FTA is expected to accentuate.

But Chile accounts for less than 0.3% of the total imports of the United States. “That is still tiny, but it’s good that it’s tiny because the room for growth is very large,” noted Concha.

But if Chile is to take advantage of these opportunities, it must increase its competitiveness, he added. Among other tasks, that means maintaining the country’s economic stability, investing in human capital and continuing to develop the physical and telecommunications infrastructure required for the growth of foreign trade, Concha told the seminar.

The U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Craig A. Kelly, also expressed optimism about the prospects for Chilean products in the U.S. market. In the first half of 2003, Chile sold goods worth just over US$2 billion to the United States, he noted, but by the first half of this year, the figure had reached US$3.2 billion.

But Ambassador Kelly also had a word of warning for his audience. “As a great admirer of Chile’s economic achievements, I want to be frank with you about intellectual property rights; the lack of proper protection of intellectual property rights can violate parts of our Free Trade Agreement,” he stated.

Moreover, he continued, such protection is in Chile’s own interest because it is good for growth, investment, jobs and innovation as well as for the country’s international reputation. “The protection of intellectual property is…a win-win situation for Chile and the United States,” he concluded.

Winning in the U.S. Market

Jon Stamell, a New York-based international marketing consultant, was the keynote speaker at the seminar. The U.S. market is complex, he admitted. But there are ways to turn those complexities into opportunities, he promised.

The key objective of any country or company is competitiveness, Stamell pointed out. And that starts with understanding customers, the decisions they face and who exactly takes those decisions. Only then is it possible to devise and implement the appropriate strategy, he argued.

That message was echoed by Rodolfo Echeverría, general manager of Coca-Cola de Chile. He also emphasized the complexity and sophistication of the U.S. market and agreed that it is vital for a company to understand its consumers and what drives them.

But getting a foothold in the U.S. market can be a daunting task. According to Stamell, the average supermarket contains between 40,000 and 80,000 products and, each year, consumers are bombarded with more than six billion pieces of direct mail. Moreover, each day, they see, hear or read more than 3,000 marketing messages – of which they only retain about three.

“With so much clutter and noise, it is a complex and challenging task, and an expensive market to enter,” Stamell warned. However, with over 290 million consumers and a per capita income of US$40,100, it also promises great rewards to those who are successful.

The entry process can be simplified by selecting a specific group of consumers or a target market segment, recommended Stamell. Indeed, the U.S. market can perhaps best be understood as a collection of smaller markets, separated by geographic area, age group and other demographic characteristics.

As regards age groups, Stamell identified six main categories: the Great Depression group (84-94 years), World War II (78-83 years), Post-War (60-77 years), Baby Boom (40-59 years), Generation X (29-39 years) and Generation Y (10-28 years). Of these, he said, the largest are the last four.

At present, it is the baby boom and post-war groups that have the greatest spending power, but that will change by 2010, predicted Stamell. Then, the groups to target will be generations X and Y, as well as the baby boomers.

But whatever the age group, the key objective is to form a relationship with customers. And that has to be a one-to-one relationship, he emphasized. It should, he said, be much more than a vendor-customer relationship, and rather one of partners.

“The winning formula is involvement; the more you get involved, the more loyalty you will win from customers,” he argued. And “customer” should be understood in a broad sense – in the case of a Chilean exporter, it is most likely to be a U.S. importer or distributor, and the goal should be to establish a strategic understanding of each other’s business.

Branding is often seen as a key issue but, according to Stamell, it is really a secondary matter. “Nations, industries and companies don’t succeed simply by becoming a ‘brand’,” he maintained. In his view, branding is not an objective in itself, but just one element in a strategy for competitiveness.

However, based on his experience advising different countries on their image – including Chile in the late 1980s, South Africa, Vietnam and Croatia – he recognized the importance for Chile of differentiating itself from competitors. And that, he added, is increasingly difficult now that every country has smart logos and flaunts its scenic beauties before already-bombarded consumers.

Country image

Other panelists at the seminar maintained that Chile’s country image is key for their export success. That is certainly the case for the fresh fruit industry, noted Ronald Bown, president of the Exporters’ Association (ASOEX).

And it is also the case for Empresas Carozzi, said international manager, Sebastián García. For the company, which expects to export chocolates, candies and pasta worth US$11 million to the U.S. this year and to see 20% growth in 2006, Chile is a brand asset, he argued.

Country of origin is even more important for wine. According to Ricardo Letelier, general manager of Wines of Chile, the wine industry’s promotional organization, the image of Chile in the U.S. is positive but, as regards wines, the challenge now is to expand into higher-price brackets.

But recent studies suggest that Chile’s country image needs some work. Within Latin America, Chile is, of course, well known but as distance increases, its image becomes weaker and more diffuse, reported Silvana Gattini, marketing promotion manager of ProChile.

Surveys suggest that, outside Latin America, Chile is best known in financial and political circles where its track record of stability sets it apart from many other emerging markets. But, among consumers, the picture gets hazier. Indeed, in one recent survey, as many people thought Chile was as important for coffee as for fruit and vegetables.

And, as regards its geographic characteristics, many foreigners identify Chile with the Andes Mountains. However, there are also quite a few under the impression that it has a tropical climate.

This diffuse image is partly a result of the fragmented nature of efforts so far to promote the country. While the Foreign Investment Committee and CORFO, the government’s economic development agency, deal with the macroeconomic and investment angle, different business organizations – like Wines of Chile – promote their sector’s products. And then, there is a separate organization for tourism.

This is a problem that ProChile is now seeking to address with the help of Interbrand, an international brand consultancy firm. As part of a US$150,000 project, which started in January and is due to be completed this month, Interbrand will propose a common or “umbrella” identity, drawing together the different threads of Chile’s existing image. In addition, it will recommend short- and long-term measures to position this identity in the minds of relevant audiences.

The private sector is involved in the project through a public-private Technical Committee, of which the Exporters’ Association, Wines of Chile and Chilealimentos, an association of food producers, are members. And this cooperation is vital, insisted Ronald Bown.

In the U.S. market, Chile’s free trade agreement gives the country an important head start, noted Silvana Gattini. But, she added, the task of developing its image will not be easy – there are, after all, a lot of other countries trying to do exactly the same thing and, in some cases, with far more resources.

Advice for Small Businesses Marketing to the U.S.:

1. Define your market and your customers as narrowly as possible.

2. Don’t worry about the branding initially.

3. Look to create market alliances such as co-branding and co-promotion.

4. Support Chile’s country image campaign.

This article is a summary of presentations from the Seminar that are available in English and Spanish on AmCham’s website (www.amchamchile.cl).
