No necesariamente.

Ahead of his participation in a seminar in Santiago, organized by AmCham, Chile’s Manufacturers’ Association (SOFOFA) and ProChile, the government’s export promotion agency, Jon Stamell, a New York-based marketing consultant, talked to bUSiness CHILE about the challenges of promoting Chilean exports in the U.S. market. Chile – even with its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the U.S. under its belt – cannot afford to rest on its laurels, warns Stamell.

You have some experience working with Chilean products; what has that involved?

My experience in Chile began in the late 1980s when I worked on a program funded jointly by ProChile and the Association of Salmon and Trout Producers. During that exercise, which lasted around three years, we found that we were spending a lot of time building an image of Chile as a country, rather than of Chilean salmon as such. And, in the 1990s, that led on to work with the Foreign Ministry precisely on Chile’s country image.

What sort of image did Chile have in the U.S. in the late 1980s?

What we found was that people in the U.S. – even the international editors of leading newspapers – didn’t know much at all about Chile, much less have an image of the country. You have to remember that, because it’s such a large country, the United States is very internally focused.

And since then…

I’d say that Chile’s image has really only changed among specific groups. Seafood buyers and wine buyers, of course, now know a lot more about Chile now. And the person on the street is aware of Chilean wines on supermarket shelves and the fact that winter fruit comes from Chile, but still doesn’t know much about the country or have an image of it.

And, at the same time, there’s tremendous competition from other countries. For instance, I’m working now with the Vietnamese fishing industry and, in wines, we see Australia, New Zealand and, for example, South Africa making important efforts to increase their share of the U.S. market. And, in that sense, I’d say that Chile has stood still or even moved backwards a bit. Markets don’t wait, they don’t stand still.

But Chile has an FTA with the U.S.; isn’t that important?

Yes, but the U.S. is now negotiating FTAs with many other countries. Free Trade Agreements are becoming a commodity.

So Chile needs to invest a lot of money in its image?

Not necessarily. What it has to do is to spend money intelligently. There’s a lot of new technology available now that allows you to do what is sometimes called “relationship market” – in other words, to build a direct, customized and long-term relationship not only with trade buyers, but also with consumers. For instance, a lot of advertising in the U.S. is moving online and, as people click on banners, you can use that to build a database of the e-mail addresses of people who are interested in a product. Of course, you also have to know how to use that database.

How, for example, is Chilean salmon doing now in the U.S.?

It has a specific problem that, frankly, I don’t think is being well addressed at all. Rightly or wrongly, people perceive that farmed salmon is not good for their health and that Chilean salmon has the highest content of trace elements. The industry has formed Salmon of the Americas, an organization of companies from the United States and Canada as well as Chile, but what it should be doing is to tell its own story, not just to trade buyers, but also to consumers. It’s consumers who decide what gets put on supermarket shelves.

What are the buttons that Chilean producers ought to be pushing to reach U.S. consumers?

Well, that depends not only on the product, but also on the age group you want to reach. You have to distinguish between the baby boomers, the Generation X and Generation Y. Each had different experiences in their formative years and so have different buttons. That’s what I mean when I talk about customized and specific marketing.
