At the beginning of July, five AmCham companies opened their doors to the community, inviting young people and senior citizens to visit their installations. For some of these children – as well as some of the older visitors – it was their first opportunity to be inside a factory! And, for the companies who participated, it was a chance to show who they are to the local community. It was a time to be a “good neighbor” – and to have fun in the process!

The Open House initiative was also an example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together. Proposed by the Chilean Foreign Investment Committee, the initiative was organized in conjunction with AmCham, with the support and participation of Santiago’s regional government authority, the Intendencia Metropolitana de Santiago, and the municipal governments of different districts of the city.

Clearly, being open and transparent, as well as being in contact with the local community is a win-win situation for all those involved. The five companies – 3M, American Airlines, Goodyear, IBM and Sherwin Williams – and their employees proudly showed who they are and were able to explain the products and services they provide. Meanwhile, the young people learned something new. If the companies had not opened their doors and if the children had not made the visit, nothing would apparently have been lost on either side – except an opportunity to learn.

Does this really matter?

We at AmCham believe it matters very much and plan to repeat the Open House initiative, perhaps annually. The benefits of such initiatives may not be so obvious when all is going well. However, in challenging times, that small space of time, in which members of the community were able to get to know each other, could prove very important indeed. A pathway could be defined to resolve a problem. Without this bridge, valuable time could be lost trying to determine how to communicate and, even before that, wondering whether the other side would listen.

As we look at today’s business issues in Chile – a greater sensitivity and visibility regarding environmental issues on the part of the local communities, the responsibility and responsiveness of corporate directors to all the company’s stakeholders, and the need to increase the investor base for new enterprises – it is clear that in all areas, higher levels of trust based on transparency and accessibility would go a long way to facilitating dialog and shaping solutions. Rather than being a “problem” for the corporate community, this can be a real opportunity. That opportunity involves all sides working together, recognizing that they share goals.

But how can “getting to know” the other side assist in taking advantage of this opportunity?

Simply by building trust and establishing channels of communications.

Sadly, this point of intersection is not always sought. Rather, a power game is sometimes played out in a bid to “impose” a solution. At times, imposed solutions are needed. But quite often these solutions are less than optimal. A consensus solution, born out of open dialog between people who know each other, is likely to be better. And it is certainly more likely to be successful since all parties tend to be committed to a solution when they formed part of the process by which it was reached.

This type of joint effort is difficult to construct when a controversial issue is raised. But it is surely much more difficult if those involved do not know each other.

AmCham encourages companies to continue extending their hand to the communities – broadly defined – in which they operate. We also encourage the communities who host enterprises to extend their hand and to take time to get to know their companies. We believe this is a matter of productivity and long-term survival and, frankly, common sense.

We salute those companies who opened their doors last month, and the numerous companies who open their doors to the communities where they operate and are “good neighbors” every day of the year. We thank the communities who have taken up the invitation and joined with these companies to build a better future.
