Los deportes organizados abundan en Chile. Jockey sobre c\u00e9sped, tenis, esqu\u00ed, b\u00e1squetbol, rugby y por supuesto, el f\u00fatbol, est\u00e1n todos implantados en el ADN de los ni\u00f1os a lo largo del pa\u00eds\u2026 \u00bfpero y el b\u00e9isbol? Bueno, prep\u00e1rense porque la Liga Menor de B\u00e9isbol ha llegado a Chile.<\/p>\n
Gracias al compromiso, entusiasmo y visi\u00f3n del Embajador Craig Kelly, y de su esposa Kim, la Liga Menor de B\u00e9isbol es actualmente una realidad en Chile. La nueva Organizaci\u00f3n de la Liga Menor Chilena, est\u00e1 regida totalmente por la Liga Menor Internacional y actualmente goza del patrocinio de Wilson Sporting Goods, quien proporcion\u00f3 un \u201ckit inicial\u201d con equipos b\u00e1sicos. Cinco equipos est\u00e1n ahora equipados, uniformados y lo que es m\u00e1s importante, est\u00e1n jugando.<\/p>\n
As\u00ed que, \u00bfde qu\u00e9 se trata todo este alboroto acerca de los muchachos que se juntan para practicar un deporte que, en general, es desconocido para Chile? Una revisi\u00f3n de la historia de la Liga Menor de b\u00e9isbol en Estados Unidos y el \u00e9xito que ella ha logrado internacionalmente, lo hacen a uno llegar a la r\u00e1pida conclusi\u00f3n, que \u00e9ste no es solamente un juego que involucra bates, pelotas y guantes. La promoci\u00f3n de buenas pr\u00e1cticas sociales, habilidades de vida, principios b\u00e1sicos sobre de la familia, valores comunitarios y la buena salud, son claves para la comprensi\u00f3n del fen\u00f3meno de la Liga Menor. Agregue a estas virtudes la oportunidad de crear un puente cultural entre Chile y los Estados Unidos y usted obtendr\u00e1 un resultado ganador.<\/p>\n
El Doctor Robert Sloan, presidente de la Universidad de Baylor, en Texas, recientemente resumi\u00f3 la importancia de las Ligas Menores de b\u00e9isbol. \u201cEn un sentido, todos los elementos b\u00e1sicos de la vida est\u00e1n en el b\u00e9isbol y en las Ligas Menores. Uno tiene que presentarse en cierto momento. Si usted se atrasa, perjudica a su equipo. Y tal como en la vida, existen desempe\u00f1os individuales aislados que son sobresalientes. Pero al final, es el equipo el que realmente cuenta. La forma en que usted ha contribuido a la causa es importante\u201d, expres\u00f3.<\/p>\n
La Liga Menor de b\u00e9isbol se inici\u00f3 en Williamsport, Pennsylvania en 1939. Se organizaron tres equipos y siete a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde el programa a\u00fan estaba confinado a Pennsylvania. Pero \u00e9ste no qued\u00f3 as\u00ed.
\nEn la actualidad, la Liga Menor es la organizaci\u00f3n deportiva juvenil m\u00e1s grande que existe en el mundo y, que ofrece b\u00e9isbol y softball a m\u00e1s de 2,8 millones de ni\u00f1os y ni\u00f1as (en edades de entre 5 y 18 a\u00f1os), en los 50 Estados del Pa\u00eds del Norte y de otros 103 pa\u00edses alrededor del mundo. Cerca de 35 millones de personas han jugado o han servido de voluntarios en las Ligas Menores, a lo largo de sus 65 a\u00f1os de historia.<\/p>\n
La misi\u00f3n del programa -que no ha cambiado desde sus modestos inicios- es la de \u201cproporcionar una actividad completa y saludable para los ni\u00f1os, utilizando el campo de juego como una sala de clase virtual, para inculcar la disciplina, el trabajo en equipo, la \u00e9tica deportiva, el juego leal y para proporcionar un conjunto de valores destinados a guiarlos en su vida de adultos y, ojal\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n, a ser ciudadanos responsables\u201d.<\/p>\n
En Estados Unidos, un estimado de 22 millones de ni\u00f1os participa en deportes fuera del colegio. Los beneficios, bien argumentados, incluyen:<\/p>\n
1.<\/B><\/font> Crear una apreciaci\u00f3n de salud y de aptitud personal;<\/p>\n 2.<\/B><\/font> Desarrollar una auto imagen positiva;<\/p>\n 3.<\/B><\/font> Aprender a trabajar como miembro de un equipo;<\/p>\n 4.<\/B><\/font> Desarrollar capacidades sociales con otros ni\u00f1os y adultos (tales como hacer turnos y compartir juegos);<\/p>\n 5.<\/B><\/font> Aprender la forma de administrar el \u00e9xito y la frustraci\u00f3n; y<\/p>\n 6.<\/B><\/font> Ense\u00f1ar c\u00f3mo respetar a los dem\u00e1s.<\/p>\n El programa de las Ligas Menores busca desarrollar la competencia social -la capacidad de desenvolverse y de ser aceptado por los pares, miembros de la familia, profesores y entrenadores- y la autoestima, o el l\u00edmite hasta el cual una persona cree que \u00e9l\/ella es capaz, importante, exitoso(a) y valioso(a). Agregar a esta receta para el desarrollo de la juventud, el hecho de que las Ligas Menores de B\u00e9isbol proporcionan un foro muy poderoso para la participaci\u00f3n de la familia.<\/p>\n \u00bfPero funcionar\u00e1 en Chile?<\/B><\/font><\/p>\n \u00bfPero cuan dif\u00edcil ser\u00e1 atraer a la juventud hacia una actividad que a primera vista parece tan poco com\u00fan? La falta de familiaridad con el b\u00e9isbol en un pa\u00eds predominantemente de mentalidad futbolista, sugiere que ello podr\u00eda no resultar f\u00e1cil. No obstante, la experiencia inicial se\u00f1ala, en forma concluyente, hacia una curva de aprendizaje que mientras est\u00e9 presente, no ser\u00e1 insuperable. Una de las fortalezas del nuevo programa de la Liga Menor, es que ella representa un esfuerzo corporativo que busca tratar de ser incluida en los intentos locales para desarrollar el deporte.<\/p>\n Ya se jugaba b\u00e9isbol en Chile, con anterioridad al lanzamiento de la Liga Menor. En el \u00e1rea Metropolitana de Santiago, la Liga Menor ha incorporado equipos provenientes de variadas comunas, tales como Cerro Navia, Maip\u00fa, \u00d1u\u00f1oa y la Pintana y ha agregado dos nuevos equipos en el colegio Nido de \u00c1guilas. Ella constituye un est\u00edmulo a los esfuerzos locales existentes. Como consecuencia, la Liga Menor de b\u00e9isbol en Chile es una verdadera asociaci\u00f3n Chileno-Estadounidense para promover a la comunidad, los valores sociales y las capacidades individuales de vida. Esta combinaci\u00f3n fortalece el programa y profundiza la participaci\u00f3n. Tal como lo puede atestiguar cualquier persona que haya asistido a alg\u00fan juego, el esp\u00edritu, la camarader\u00eda y la \u00e9tica deportiva que se generan, no s\u00f3lo son evidentes, es contagioso entre los jugadores, que conforman cinco equipos, alcanzando los 100 ni\u00f1os. El b\u00e9isbol en Chile como un medio para ense\u00f1ar valores, no s\u00f3lo es posible\u2026 est\u00e1 instalado aqu\u00ed con ganas.<\/p>\n La Liga Menor en Chile ha iniciado sus actividades con una base de apoyo muy s\u00f3lida. Tanto el Presidente Lagos y como el Presidente Bush, han se\u00f1alado su apreciaci\u00f3n e inter\u00e9s por el esfuerzo de la Liga Menor. Un apoyo similar provino de la Secretaria de Estado de Norteam\u00e9rica, Condoleezza Rice. Durante una visita a Santiago, en Abril, ella dispuso de tiempo dentro de su apretada agenda, para reunirse con un grupo de miembros de la Liga Menor.<\/p>\n A nivel municipal, varios alcaldes han reconocido la contribuci\u00f3n que la Liga Menor de b\u00e9isbol puede traer para sus comunidades y la est\u00e1n adoptando como un medio de proporcionar programas para la juventud, que se necesitan con tanta urgencia. Pero el futuro potencial de la Liga Menor de b\u00e9isbol en Chile, probablemente se resume de mejor forma en el entusiasmo de los propios ni\u00f1os. \u201cLo que m\u00e1s me gusta es ser parte de un equipo\u201d, dice Derek Ewald, de 9 a\u00f1os de edad. Con apoyos de este tipo, es muy f\u00e1cil que la Liga crezca en Santiago, y en el resto del pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n La Liga Menor de Chile tambi\u00e9n proporciona a la comunidad de negocios una atractiva plataforma para canalizar los esfuerzos de responsabilidad social corporativa, una opci\u00f3n que AmCham apoya en forma entusiasta. Para muchas compa\u00f1\u00edas peque\u00f1as y medianas, que carecen de escala para crear programas propios de responsabilidad social corporativa, la Liga Menor chilena entrega un paraguas de servicio comunitario y una oportunidad para hacer coincidir sus productos o servicios con un proyecto atractivo y visible de gran valor.<\/p>\n Una Reflexi\u00f3n Personal<\/B><\/I><\/p>\n Como muchos de los miembros de las Ligas Menores, me acuerdo de mi experiencia propia en la Liga Menor, hace 48 a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s. A\u00fan recuerdo haber recibido ese llamado telef\u00f3nico del gerente de Sheldon Davis -un equipo denominado con el nombre de un corredor de seguros local, de New Jersey- para darme a conocer que hab\u00eda sido elegido para el equipo. Literalmente salt\u00e9 de alegr\u00eda y toque el techo de nuestro subterr\u00e1neo familiar, por primera vez. A\u00fan veo a mis padres alent\u00e1ndome desde los grader\u00edos en mi primera oportunidad frente al bate, y tambi\u00e9n me acuerdo de las palabras de ayuda positivas, despu\u00e9s de los tres strikes inevitables, que fueron cantados en una cantidad igual de lanzamientos. Curiosamente, lo que me ha quedado en lo personal, despu\u00e9s de todos estos a\u00f1os, no fue tanto aquello de un juego que involucra una pelota, un bate y un guante. Lo que m\u00e1s recuerdo, fue el esp\u00edritu de equipo; fue la lecci\u00f3n acerca de que a veces uno pierde y debe aceptar la derrota con cortes\u00eda. Fue el aprender que cultivar una actitud positiva es tan importante como ganar; fue la oportunidad de compartir con mis padres una experiencia en la cual yo era el protagonista y ellos eran los hinchas; fue la ocasi\u00f3n para aprender a socializar con los dem\u00e1s, de un modo divertido y enriquecedor. Observar a la Liga Menor, desarrollarse en Chile con sus principios \u00edntegros, es reconfortante. Algunas cosas jam\u00e1s debieran cambiar. Los principios universales de las Ligas Menores son algunas de esas cosas. Organized sports abound in Chile. Field hockey, tennis, skiing, basketball, rugby and, of course, soccer are all imbedded in the DNA of children throughout the country\u2026but baseball? Well, get ready because Little League baseball has arrived in Chile.<\/p>\n Thanks to the commitment, enthusiasm and vision of Ambassador Craig Kelly and his wife Kim, Little League baseball is now a reality in Chile. The new Chilean Little League Organization is fully chartered by the International Little League, and currently enjoys the sponsorship of Wilson Sporting Goods, who provided a \u201cstarter kit\u201d with basic equipment. Five teams are now equipped, uniformed and, more importantly, they are playing. <\/p>\n So what\u2019s the big fuss about kids getting together to play a sport that is largely unfamiliar in Chile? A review of the history of Little League baseball in the United States and the success it has attained internationally bring one to the quick conclusion that it\u2019s not just a game involving bats, balls and gloves. Promotion of social skills, life skills, family values, community values and good health are keys to understanding the Little League phenomenon. Add to these virtues the opportunity of building a cultural bridge between Chile and the United States and you get a winning result.<\/p>\n Dr. Robert Sloan, president of Baylor University, Texas, recently summed up the importance of Little League baseball. \u201cIn a way, all the basic elements of life are in baseball and Little League. You have to show up at a certain time. If you are late, you let the team down. And just like life, there are isolated individual performances that stand out. But, in the end, it is what the team did that really matters. How you contributed to the cause is important,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Little League baseball had its beginning in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1939. Three teams were organized and seven years later the program was still confined to Pennsylvania. But it didn\u2019t stay that way. <\/p>\n Today, Little League is the world\u2019s largest youth sports organization, offering baseball and softball to more than 2.8 million boys and girls (ages 5 to 18) in all 50 states of the United States and 103 other countries around the globe. Some 35 million people have played or volunteered for Little League in its 65-year history. <\/p>\n The program\u2019s mission – unchanged since its humble beginning – is to \u201cprovide a wholesome, healthy activity for children using the sports field as a virtual classroom to instill discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play, and to provide a set of values to guide them into adulthood and hopefully responsible citizenship\u201d. <\/p>\n In the United States, an estimated 22 million children are involved in sports outside of school. The well-documented benefits include: <\/p>\n 1.<\/B><\/font> Building an appreciation of personal health and fitness;<\/p>\n 2.<\/B><\/font> Developing a positive self-image;<\/p>\n 3.<\/B><\/font> Teaching how to work as part of a team;<\/p>\n 4.<\/B><\/font> Developing social skills with other children and adults (such as taking turns and sharing playing);<\/p>\n 5.<\/B><\/font> Teaching how to manage success and disappointment; and,<\/p>\n 6.<\/B><\/font> Teaching how to respect others.<\/p>\n The Little League program seeks to develop social competence – the ability to get along with and be accepted by peers, family members, teachers and coaches – and self-esteem, or the extent to which an individual believes him\/herself to be capable, significant, successful and worthy. Add to this recipe for youth development the fact that Little League baseball provides a very powerful forum for family involvement. <\/p>\n But will it work in Chile?<\/B><\/font><\/p>\n How difficult will it be to attract young people to an activity that at first blush appears so unfamiliar? Lack of familiarity with baseball in a predominantly soccer-minded country suggests that it might not be easy. However, initial experience points conclusively to a learning curve that, while present, is not insurmountable. One of the strengths of the new Little League program is that it represents a cooperative effort that seeks to be inclusive of local efforts to develop the sport. <\/p>\n Baseball was already being played in Chile before the launch of Little League. In the Santiago metropolitan area, Little League has incorporated teams from districts such as Cerro Navia, Maip\u00fa, \u00d1u\u00f1oa, and La Pintana, and has added two new teams at the Nido de Aguilas School. It adds stimulus to existing local efforts. As a consequence, Little League baseball in Chile is a true U.S.-Chilean partnership to promote community, social values and individual life skills. This combination strengthens the program and deepens participation. As anyone who has attended a game can attest to, the spirit, camaraderie and good sportsmanship generated is not only evident, it is contagious among players spanning five teams and almost 100 kids. Baseball in Chile as a conduit to teaching values is not only possible\u2026it is here with a vengeance.<\/p>\n Little League in Chile has started its activities with a very solid base of support. President Lagos and President Bush have both indicated their appreciation and interest in the Little League effort. Similar support was received from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. On a visit to Santiago in April, she took time from her busy schedule to meet with a group of Little Leaguers. <\/p>\n At the municipal level, a number of mayors have recognized the contribution that Little League baseball can bring to their communities and are embracing it as a way of providing sorely needed youth programs. But the future potential of Little League baseball in Chile is perhaps best summed up by the enthusiasm of the kids themselves. \u201cWhat I most like is being part of a team,\u201d says 9-year-old Derek Ewald. With endorsements like this, it is easy to see the league growing in Santiago as well as nationally. <\/p>\n Little League Chile also provides the business community with an attractive platform to channel corporate social responsibility efforts, an option that AmCham enthusiastically endorses. For many small and medium-sized companies that lack the scale to create corporate social responsibility programs on their own, Little League Chile provides a community service umbrella and an opportunity to identify their products or services with an attractive and visible project of great value.<\/p>\n A Personal Reflection<\/B><\/I><\/p>\n Like many Little Leaguers, I am reminded of my own Little League experience 48 years ago. I still remember getting that phone call from the manager of Sheldon Davis – a team named after a local New Jersey insurance broker – to let me know that I had made the team. I literally jumped for joy, and touched the ceiling of our family basement for the first time. I still picture my parents in the stands cheering me on my first at bat – and I also remember the words of positive reinforcement after the inevitable strike three was called in as many pitches. Curiously, what has stayed with me all these years was not so much a game involving a ball, a bat and a glove. What I recall the most was the team spirit; it was the lesson that sometimes you lose and can accept defeat with grace; it was learning that cultivating a positive attitude is just as important as winning; it was the opportunity to share with my parents an experience where I was the protagonist and they were the fans; it was the opportunity to learn socialization in a fun and nurturing way. Watching Little League develop in Chile with its principles intact is a source of comfort. Some things should never change.
