Santiago Eneldo

(Comentarios y abusos a santiagoeneldo@yahoo.com)

It rained today; it rained hard and the internal-combustion-engine-powered elephants trumpeted louder than ever as they herded back to their residential grazing grounds. I had to walk just a relatively short distance through the urban jungle to my carriage but a stampede between Ricardo Lyon and Pedro de Valdivia (both major pathways named for very eminent – dead – heroes of the reservation) put up a massive wall of water, which turned me from radiant flower to soggy, angry mess. I finally boarded my carriage, dripping rain water all around and “filtered” to join the daily migration.

I was determined to behave like an intelligent, educated, collaborative elephant and be generous to all my “mates” stampeding alongside. Not for long! A large female elephant (a real Matriarch) decided that my line of gallop was ideal for her and, being larger and heavier than I, she stole my position, thereby forcing me to stumble and bump into a fellow male galloper, who trumpeted something wicked and waved his trunk threateningly at me – at least I think it was his trunk. Luckily, the downpour was of such intensity and the herd was moving along at such a pace that neither of us stopped (skin damage only) and I was soon able to resume my position and pace.

Needless to say, the storm was intense but short-lived and, within the hour, normal grazing could be resumed, but the incident (both the soaking and the bump) really made me reflect on the habits of my species. I shall refrain from further use of the analogy or this could turn into a Rudyard Kipling short story! I once wrote that I wanted to see the American “four-way crossing” system introduced in Santiago – just for the fun of seeing who wins, who loses and who crashes! In Santiago, we don’t give ground to anyone – that would be very cowardly. No, we give not an inch. In fact, we drive so close to the car in front (so no one can possibly get in front) that if anyone should brake hard, you can guarantee a minimum eight-car pile-up!

We needed this rain – it was very welcome. Tomorrow, the air will be clean with the smog washed away and, at least until lunchtime (4 pm!), we will be able to see all the way across Santiago. Tomorrow will be a beautiful day. But will we be happier, kinder, more beautiful people? No way! My office is beside a major elephant (sorry) runway crossing, controlled by “traffic lights” that work quite normally, with the appropriate “orange” (or amber) warning light between green and red. Does this cautionary light slow the herd (sorry)? No, not a bit! On the contrary, it actually causes the herd (sorry) to accelerate and, as the elephants (sorry) waiting to cross at 90º pre-empt the light change, there is a noisy rattling of tusks (sorry) accompanied by truly mega trumpeting (very sorry) two or three times a day.

A few weeks ago, I walked from my home to the office (one hour and twenty minutes) just for the heck of it. The greatest “change” for me was of perspective. Instead of being part of the stampede (sorry), I was moving along in slow motion able to observe the jungle and take in the beauty – yes! the beauty! It is all there if only we had time to see it: trees growing, children playing and dogs reproducing; shop windows, well kept gardens and razor wire walls; people who say “buenos días” and others who say “expletive deleted”; the blind, the maimed, the beggar and the old man watering his stone pathway. Yes, that is real life, but we will never see any of it if we continue to race madly along.

Once trumpeted, twice shy. Try a change of carriage sometime (go feet go!). It might just change you.

I remain elephiantly (truly sorry!) defiant but walking tall (Masai),

Santiago Eneldo

(Comments & abuse to santiagoeneldo@yahoo.com)

Llovió hoy día.
