\u00bfQu\u00e9 hace que un pa\u00eds sea competitivo? \u00c9ste es un tema del que o\u00edmos casi todos los d\u00edas en las noticias, la prensa y el trabajo. En la edici\u00f3n de este mes de bUSiness CHILE<\/STRONG>, revisamos varios casos que claramente muestran qu\u00e9 significa en la pr\u00e1ctica la competitividad, ya sea que se trate de una empresa que inventa una nueva tecnolog\u00eda para prolongar la frescura de la fruta, un nuevo acuerdo entre el estado de California y Chile, el impacto de las iniciativas de facilitaci\u00f3n de intercambio comercial, una sociedad \u00fanica para la conservaci\u00f3n del medio ambiente entre empresas y la comunidad de ONG, las din\u00e1micas del siempre creciente sector de servicios de Chile o la implementaci\u00f3n de una nueva legislaci\u00f3n laboral relacionada con los trabajadores subcontratistas en Chile.<\/P> Estos casos muestran claramente lo que es la competitividad y lo que no, tambi\u00e9n. En ocasiones, la competitividad ha sido vista como una lista de “tareas”, como si hubiera una receta para ser competitivo.<\/P> Pero \u00bfqu\u00e9 formula ten\u00eda AirOcare para desarrollar su nueva tecnolog\u00eda de tratamiento con aire para la fruta? \u00bfQu\u00e9 lista consultan los exportadores de servicios de Chile para identificar nuevos mercados y nuevos productos? \u00bfQu\u00e9 gu\u00eda usan los Gobiernos de Chile y Estados Unidos para dise\u00f1ar un plan destinado a promover sinergias entre California y Chile?<\/P> Por otra parte, tenemos una nueva ley de subcontrataci\u00f3n que trajo como resultado violentas confrontaciones y que se estima fracas\u00f3 en lo que respecta a abordar un tema importante: que los derechos de los trabajadores sean respetados. Estos disturbios claramente afectan la competitividad de Chile. Sin embargo, no hubo lista que no se chequeara.<\/P> La respuesta es que no hay listas, gu\u00edas o f\u00f3rmulas: cada d\u00eda hay nuevos desaf\u00edos que requieren nuevas soluciones.<\/P> Pero, \u00bfqu\u00e9 es competitividad?<\/P> Los ejemplos descritos en la revista de este mes muestran claramente que la competitividad es extr\u00ednseca, progresista y colaborativa. La competitividad tiene que ver con nuevas ideas y nuevas formas de hacer que las cosas pasen.<\/P> El mundo es cada vez m\u00e1s global y Chile ha estado a la vanguardia de esta tendencia. AirOcare encontr\u00f3 que la protecci\u00f3n de la propiedad intelectual era mejor en Estados Unidos y desarroll\u00f3 su empresa ah\u00ed. Chile y California identificaron sinergias y dise\u00f1aron formas de fortalecerlas. La industria naviera de Chile entendi\u00f3 la importancia que tiene el transporte eficiente para el crecimiento del pa\u00eds y ayud\u00f3 a desarrollar la log\u00edstica necesaria para que ello fuera posible.<\/P> La competitividad tambi\u00e9n mira al futuro. El mundo est\u00e1 cambiando a un ritmo muy r\u00e1pido. Constantemente surgen nuevos desaf\u00edos y, a su vez, entregan nuevas oportunidades. Puede que lo que funcion\u00f3 ayer no funcione ma\u00f1ana. Las empresas del sector de servicios de Chile est\u00e1n aprovechando esto acumulando experiencia en industrias que est\u00e1n creciendo y desarroll\u00e1ndose en Chile y que est\u00e1n liderando el cambio global. La actual agitaci\u00f3n en los mercados financieros representa la amenaza de hoy en d\u00eda y la oportunidad de ma\u00f1ana.<\/P> Trabajar juntos tambi\u00e9n es crucial. Comprender c\u00f3mo operan distintos mercados y dise\u00f1ar soluciones que sean de mutuo beneficio es clave para identificar las mejores pr\u00e1cticas a seguir que generen valor agregado. Eso es lo que Chile ha hecho al desarrollar su acuerdo con California. Se trata de entender que la conservaci\u00f3n puede ser importante para los negocios tal como lo descubri\u00f3 Goldman Sachs al trabajar en el desarrollo del proyecto Karukinka.<\/P> AmCham<\/STRONG> est\u00e1 comprometida con una visi\u00f3n progresista, ser global y trabajar de manera conjunta en lo relativo a la propiedad intelectual, la facilitaci\u00f3n del intercambio comercial y la promoci\u00f3n de la inversi\u00f3n y, en el entretanto, contribuir a las ideas que puedan ayudarnos a construir futuras oportunidades para Chile.<\/P> These cases show us clearly what competitiveness is – and what it is not. At times, competitiveness has been viewed as a “to do” check list – as if there were a recipe for being competitive. <\/p>\n But what formula did AirOcare have to develop its new air treatment technology for fruit? What list do Chile\u2019s service exporters consult to identify new markets and new products? What guide book did the Governments of Chile and the United States use to design a plan to promote synergies between California and Chile? <\/p>\n On the other hand, we have a new labor law for subcontracting which has resulted in violent confrontations and is considered to be a failure at addressing what is clearly an important issue – that workers\u2019 rights be respected. These disturbances clearly hurt Chile\u2019s competitiveness. However, there was no check list which was not followed.<\/p>\n The answer is that there are no check lists or guidebooks or formulas – every day there are new challenges which require new solutions.<\/p>\n But what is competitiveness?<\/p>\n The examples described in this month\u2019s magazine show clearly that competitiveness is outward-focused, forward-looking and collegial. Competitiveness is about new ideas and new ways of making things happen.<\/p>\n The world is increasingly global and Chile has been at the forefront of this trend. AirOcare found better intellectual property protection in the United States and developed its business there. Chile and California identified synergies and designed a means to strengthen them. Chile\u2019s shipping industry understood the importance of efficient transport to the country\u2019s growth and helped to develop the logistics to make this happen. <\/p>\n Competitiveness also looks to the future. The world is changing at a very fast pace. New challenges are constantly arising and, in turn, provide new opportunities. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. Chile\u2019s service sector companies are taking advantage of this by building expertise in industries which are growing and developing in Chile and which are leading global change. Today\u2019s turbulence in financial markets represents today\u2019s threat and tomorrow\u2019s opportunity.<\/p>\n Working together is also crucial. Understanding how different markets operate and designing mutually beneficial solutions are critical to identifying best practices which generate value-added. That is what Chile has done in developing its agreement with California.
