\nSeg\u00fan datos de la Organizaci\u00f3n de Naciones Unidas en 2010 casi 370 mil inmigrantes hab\u00eda en Chile, cifra que subi\u00f3 considerablemente a 470 mil en 2015. La mayor\u00eda de las personas que se han radicado en nuestro pa\u00eds suelen pertenecer a niveles educativos m\u00e1s elevados, es decir, profesionales y t\u00e9cnicos especializados en diversas \u00e1reas, lo que ha significado un importante aporte al desarrollo econ\u00f3mico, social y cultural.<\/p>\n
Actualmente, vivimos en un escenario global cada vez m\u00e1s din\u00e1mico, en el cual prima la multiculturalidad y el intercambio de experiencias como herramienta clave para el desarrollo de la innovaci\u00f3n y la adopci\u00f3n de nuevas tendencias.<\/p>\n
Los movimientos migratorios entre Chile y otros pa\u00edses representa un componente clave en la din\u00e1mica demogr\u00e1fica, el que incide directamente en el crecimiento econ\u00f3mico, y que adem\u00e1s requiere la conformaci\u00f3n de nuevas leyes. Actualmente, est\u00e1 en discusi\u00f3n la necesidad de modificar la actual Ley de Migraciones, en particular lo relacionado a derechos y deberes en torno al aspecto laboral. Ello, sin lugar a dudas, incidir\u00e1 en el posicionamiento de Chile en el mundo y en qu\u00e9 tipo de protagonismo tendremos en torno a esta materia.<\/p>\n
Lo cierto es que hemos dado importantes avances en el tema migratorio, destacando ejemplos de colaboraci\u00f3n y entendimiento como el que tenemos con Estados Unidos. Dicho pa\u00eds no s\u00f3lo es nuestro principal socio comercial, sino que adem\u00e1s ciudades como Nueva York y Los \u00c1ngeles son los lugares que concentran m\u00e1s chilenos. Seg\u00fan el censo realizado en dicho pa\u00eds en 2010 la cantidad de chilenos residentes supera las 120.000 personas (el segundo pa\u00eds donde m\u00e1s emigran los chilenos despu\u00e9s de Argentina, con 612 mil habitantes).<\/p>\n
Los chilenos que han prosperado en Estados Unidos son varios, siendo algunos ejemplos destacados el del bioqu\u00edmico y Premio Nacional de Ciencias, Pablo Valenzuela, quien particip\u00f3 en la creaci\u00f3n de la vacuna contra el virus de la Hepatitis B y en el desarrollo de investigaciones que permitieron secuenciar el genoma del Sida. En otros \u00e1mbitos, est\u00e1 el caso de Ricardo Caballero, uno de los economistas nacionales m\u00e1s reconocidos en el exterior y actual docente del Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT).<\/p>\n
Finalmente, en c\u00edrculos intelectuales se pueden identificar las obras del pintor y escultor Benjam\u00edn Lira y del fot\u00f3grafo Sergio Larra\u00edn, creaciones que son citadas por publicaciones en forma permanente, a la vez que son un retrato de la sociedad y estilo de vida americano en distintas d\u00e9cadas y periodos del siglo XX.<\/p>\n
Los chilenos citados son parte de la historia de Estados Unidos, cuyos habitantes tambi\u00e9n han privilegiado a Chile como destino para vivir. Seg\u00fan cifras del Censo 2012 m\u00e1s de 11.000 estadounidenses viven en nuestro pa\u00eds, quienes aportan al desarrollo de negocios desde distintos sectores productivos. Estos ciudadanos han emigrado a nuestro pa\u00eds producto de los altos indicadores socioecon\u00f3micos en comparaci\u00f3n a otros pa\u00edses de Am\u00e9rica Latina. Tambi\u00e9n es posible identificar a un gran n\u00famero de estudiantes estadounidenses. Un informe del Instituto para la Educaci\u00f3n Internacional (IIE por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) detalla que entre los a\u00f1os lectivos 2007-08 y 2008-09 se increment\u00f3 en 28% la cantidad de estudiantes de Estados Unidos residentes en diversas regiones de nuestra naci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
Los inmigrantes forman parte de un \u00e1mbito que incidir\u00e1 en el crecimiento de Chile en el siglo XXI. Tambi\u00e9n es una tendencia que muestra a los chilenos y extranjeros en permanente v\u00ednculo, lo que influye directamente en el intercambio de experiencias y en el desarrollo de nuevos espacios de colaboraci\u00f3n, y que AmCham Chile tambi\u00e9n promueve a trav\u00e9s de sus comit\u00e9s y l\u00edneas de trabajo. Adem\u00e1s, el que Santiago y otras ciudades sean un destino atractivo para personas de otras naciones demuestra la estabilidad de nuestra institucionalidad y econom\u00eda, las que son cada vez m\u00e1s reconocidas a nivel internacional. Ahora el desaf\u00edo es poder regular este tema, de modo que los extranjeros en Chile tengan las condiciones necesarias para su empleabilidad y desarrollo.[:en]<\/p>\n
According to the United Nations, there were almost 370,000 immigrants in Chile in 2010; a figure which had risen considerably to 470,000 in 2015. Of these migrants, the majority have a higher level of education than the average Chilean, i.e., they have professional and technical qualifications in diverse areas. This has proved to be a significant contribution to national economic, social and cultural development.<\/p>\n
We are currently living in an increasingly dynamic global scenario in which multiculturalism and the exchange of experiences are key tools for developing innovation and adopting new trends.<\/p>\n
In general terms, migratory movements between Chile and other countries are a central component of overall demographic dynamics, in which all migrants directly affect economic growth. Moreover, this situation requires the design of new and up-to-date legislation. Accordingly, there is ongoing discussion in Chile of the need to amend the existing Migration Act, particularly in regard to the rights and duties of immigrants in relation to employment. This process is incredibly important and will undoubtedly impact on the country\u2019s standing in the world, helping to shape its prominence on the global stage.<\/p>\n
It is clear that Chile has made significant progress in this area, exemplified by its numerous instances of collaboration and understanding with other nations, such as those with the United States. Indeed, the US is not only Chile\u2019s main trading partner, but also its cities including New York and Los Angeles are home to the highest numbers of Chileans in that country. According to the census undertaken in the US in 2010, the number of Chileans resident in America exceeded 120,000. Overall, the US is second on the list in terms of Chilean citizens living abroad, behind Argentina which is home to 612,000 Chileans.<\/p>\n
Examples of Chileans to have succeeded in the US are numerous. One is the notable case of the biochemist and winner of the Chilean National Science Award, Pablo Valenzuela, who during his time in America has participated in the creation of a vaccine against the hepatitis B virus and collaborated in research which has enabled scientists to sequence the AIDS genome.<\/p>\n
In a distinct field, Ricardo Caballero is one of the most renowned Chilean economists on the international stage and current professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).<\/p>\n
In the field of arts, the creations of painter and sculptor Benjam\u00edn Lira and photographer Sergio Larra\u00edn are worthy of note. Indeed, their respective works are regularly cited by numerous publications for their depictions of US society and the American way of life during different decades and periods of the 20th century.<\/p>\n
The aforementioned Chileans are now part of US history. But it is not all one way traffic, as numerous US citizens have influenced Chilean history by choosing to call this country their home. According to figures from the 2012 census, more than 11,000 Americans live in Chile, contributing widely to the development of businesses across a range of productive sectors. In fact, many US citizens have emigrated to Chile due to its high socioeconomic indicators compared to other Latin American countries.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, there are large numbers of students from the US studying in Chile. A report compiled by the Institute of International Education (IIE) states that between the academic years of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, the number of students from the US studying in various regions of the country rose by 20%.<\/p>\n
Immigrants form part of an important group that will continue to contribute to the growth of Chile throughout the 21st century. In addition, migration is a trend that reflects a permanent bond between Chileans and non-Chileans, which directly affects the exchange of experiences and the generation of new opportunities for collaboration. Furthermore, this is a trend that AmCham Chile is also promoting through its distinct committees and areas of work.<\/p>\n
Moreover, that Santiago and other cities and regions of the country are an attractive destination for people from other countries demonstrates the stability of Chile\u2019s institutions and economy, which are increasingly recognized on the global stage.
