El gran debate final se realizará la tarde del 27 de julio en la salón central del ex Congreso, en el centro de Santiago. Los concursantes formaron grupos de cuatro integrantes cada uno, de los cuales sólo uno debe ser un hablante nativo de inglés. Ante el público presente en el debate y un panel de cinco jueces, propondrán o se opondrán a una moción siguiendo las reglas básicas del debate parlamentario. Las mociones cubren una amplia gama de temas económicos, ambientales y sociales, pero el comité del debate ha evitado los temas que podrían ser controvertidos para las empresas involucradas en el concurso. Los temas a debatir hasta ahora incluyen legislación antidumping, voto obligatorio, discriminación en el lugar de trabajo, fumar en lugares públicos y daño ambiental en la construcción de plantas hidroeléctricas. Todos los equipos han recibido entrenamiento para hablar en público, conocer técnicas de debate y, en especial, para pensar y responder ágilmente. Los resultados han sido extremadamente alentadores, al tiempo que los jueces y el público se han referido positivamente tanto al dominio del lenguaje como a la fortaleza de los argumentos. Ganadores y perdedores parecen estar disfrutando la experiencia por igual, aunque la idea de tener que defender una idea con la que uno no está necesariamente de acuerdo -parte esencial de un debate competitivo- al principio creo cierta reticencia. ¿Por qué debatir? Hay dos elementos básicos involucrados en el debate y tras la competencia. Su primer propósito es promover el uso del inglés en las empresas. Se dice que la práctica hace al maestro y la estructura del debate proporciona una excelente y desafiante atmósfera para desarrollar habilidades orales en cualquier idioma, pero especialmente de una segunda lengua. Muchos tienen un gran temor a hablar en público, en cualquier idioma. Aquí, se exige a los concursantes defender de manera competente una posición a veces complicada en un idioma que no es el materno. Una tarea atemorizante. Pero que los equipos en competencia han manejado con aparente facilidad. Quizás vale la pena mencionar que los jueces han sido instruidos para premiar la presentación, argumentos y estrategia, pero no para penalizar el mal uso del lenguaje o los errores gramaticales de modo que los hablantes no nativos de ningún modo se encuentran en desventaja. El segundo y principal propósito es ser capaz de defender una idea de manera lógica y convincente ante una audiencia que puede o no ser comprensiva. Esto es algo que se exige todos los días a la gente de negocios y a casi todo el mundo. Una presentación ante el jefe, el comité de gasto de capital, la gerencia, los representantes sindicales o incluso en casa en el comedor, todas requieren facultades básicas de persuasión: la habilidad para convencer a otros de las convicciones propias, en esencia, la habilidad para vender la idea que uno tiene. Cada presentación de venta -ya sea promoviendo seguros de vida, yates de lujo o aviones privados- requiere las mismas habilidades. Uno debe desarrollar un argumento y presentarlo de una manera convincente. Éste es el arte de debatir. Técnicamente, el diccionario Webster define el acto de debatir como “la discusión formal de una moción ante un panel deliberante según las reglas del proceder parlamentario” o “disputar o luchar en palabras”. The Great Corporate Debate ciertamente ha demostrado ser una disputa en palabras para la entretención y deleite del público. También ha mostrado que los ejecutivos chilenos no son tan introvertidos como muchos piensan y que no tienen ningún problema en pararse para defender una idea controvertida… en inglés.The English-speaking Chambers of Commerce in Chile, headed by AmCham, have organized an inter-company debating contest termed “The Great Corporate Debate”. The grand final debate is this July 27 in the evening in the main hall of the old Senate Building in downtown Santiago. Contestants field teams of four debaters each, only one of whom may be a native English-speaker. Before a live audience, and a panel of five judges, they propose or oppose a motion following the basic rules of parliamentary debate. The motions cover a wide range of social, environmental and economic subjects but the debate committee has avoided subjects which might be contentious to the companies involved in the contest. Subjects debated so far include antidumping legislation, mandatory voting, discrimination in the workplace, smoking in public places, and environmental damage in the construction of hydroelectric power plants. All the teams have been given training in public speaking, debating techniques and, especially, in thinking on their feet. The results have been extremely encouraging, and judges and audience alike have commented positively on both the mastery of the language, and the strength of the arguments. Winners and losers both seem to be enjoying the experience, even though the idea of having to defend an idea that one does not necessarily agree with - an essential part of competitive debate - at first created some resistance. Why debate at all? There are two basic elements involved in debating and behind the competition. Its first purpose is to promote the use of the English language in business. Practice makes perfect they say, and the debate structure gives an excellent and challenging atmosphere in which to develop speaking skills in any language, but especially in a second language. Many have a deep fear of public speaking, in any language. Here, contestants are required to competently defend a sometimes complicated position in a language not their own. A daunting task. But one that the competing teams have handled with apparent ease. It is perhaps worth mentioning that judges have been instructed to reward presentation, argument and strategy, but not to penalize language misuse or grammatical errors so that non-native speakers are in no way disadvantaged. The second and principal purpose is to be able to defend an idea logically and convincingly before an audience that may or may not be sympathetic. This is something that businesspeople, and almost everyone else, are required to do every day. A presentation to one’s boss, to the capital expenditure committee, to management, to union representatives or even at home around the dinner table, all require basic powers of persuasion - an ability to convince others of one's convictions, in essence to sell one’s idea. Every sales presentation - whether promoting life insurance or luxury yachts or private jets - requires the same skills. One must develop an argument and present it in a convincing manner. This is the art of debating. Technically, the Webster dictionary defines debating as “the formal discussion of a motion before a deliberative body according to the rules of parliamentary procedure” or to “fight or contend in words”. The Great Corporate Debate has certainly proved a contention in words, to the amusement and delight of the audiences. It has also shown that Chilean executives are not as introverted as many believe, and that they have no problem in standing up to defend a contentious idea…in English."}
