Pero, ¿Qué es lo que tiene en mente exactamente el nuevo gobierno? Chile está envejeciendo. Gracias al crecimiento económico y a un sistema de salud que ha ido avanzando, la esperanza de vida ha alcanzado casi los 80 años y, para el 2020, unos tres millones de chilenos, o, en otras palabras, el 17% de la población, tendrá sobre 60 años. Pero cada vez más chilenos también se están preguntando cómo se van a mantener cuando lleguen a la vejez. A pesar del éxito del sistema privado de pensiones en Chile y de su contribución al desarrollo de los mercados de capitales del país, cerca de la mitad de la fuerza de trabajo de Chile, en su mayoría mujeres y trabajadores independientes, no recibirán – si las cosas se mantienen como están- ni siquiera una pensión mínima de US$140 al mes cuando se jubilen.During her election campaign, President Michelle Bachelet promised that pension reform would be the hallmark of her government. But what exactly does the new administration have in mind? Chile is getting older. Thanks to economic growth and improved healthcare, average life expectancy has reached nearly 80 years and, by 2020, some three million Chileans, or 17% of the population, will be over 60. But more and more Chileans are also wondering how they will support themselves in old age. Despite the economic success of Chile’s private pension system and its contribution to the development of the country’s capital markets, about half of Chile’s workforce, mainly women and the self-employed, will not - if things continue as they are - receive even a minimum pension of US$140 a month when they retire."}
