But another ingredient is missing - the political determination to put Chile on a par with international standards.   When something doesn\u2019t work, the temptation is to throw it away and start again. That is what high school students suggested Chile should do with its education system when they came out on strike recently in protest against the quality of state schooling and its inequity.  \u201cPoor kids have dreams just like rich ones but our schooling traps us in our social class,\u201d says V\u00edctor D\u00edaz, a taxi driver\u2019s son in his last year at a state school in Santiago. \u201cEven if we\u2019re brighter, we\u2019re not going to get anywhere.\u201d"}
