During her election campaign, President Michelle Bachelet promised that pension reform would be the hallmark of her government. But what exactly does the new administration have in mind? Chile is getting older. Thanks to economic growth and improved healthcare, average life expectancy has reached nearly 80 years and, by 2020, some three million Chileans, or 17% of the population, will be over 60. But more and more Chileans are also wondering how they will support themselves in old age. Despite the economic success of Chile’s private pension system and its contribution to the development of the country’s capital markets, about half of Chile’s workforce, mainly women and the self-employed, will not - if things continue as they are - receive even a minimum pension of US$140 a month when they retire.
</oembed>
